Six Chinese nurses were awarded the Florence Nightingale Medal, the highest international honor a nurse can achieve, on Saturday for their outstanding contribution to healthcare.
Chinese Vice President Li Yuanchao presented the medals to Li Xiuhua and Yang Li from Beijing, Yang Hui from Shanxi, Yang Huiyun from Xi'an, Yan Yanling from Jilin and You Jianping from Chongqing in a ceremony at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
The Florence Nightingale Medal was introduced in 1912 by the International Committee of the Red Cross.
A total of 79 Chinese nurses have been granted the award since the country started to recommend candidates in 1983. This year, a total of 39 nurses from 22 countries were bestowed the honor.
The award's namesake was a British nurse known for her pioneering work with soldiers during the Crimean War between 1853 and 1856.
Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi issued certificates to the awarded winners at the ceremony.
Chen Lan, China's Minister of Health, also delivered a speech and called on nurses to follow the example of the winners, and continue to contribute to the development of the healthcare sector in the country.
