India's foreign minister said on Tuesday that 39 Indians believed to have been kidnapped by Islamic State militants in Iraq in 2014, are confirmed dead.
The bodies were recovered from a mass grave. DNA tests proved they are the remains of the construction workers who went missing from the Iraqi city of Mosul. The workers were reportedly abducted in June 2014 when ISIL jihadists took over large swathes of territory in Iraq and captured Mosul. The victims were mostly from poor families in India's northern state of Punjab.
