Almost 900,000 Iraqis have been displaced since government forces began their operation to recapture the war-torn city of Mosul from ISIL militants last October.
According to the Norwegian Refugee Council, the displaced are in dire need of water, food, shelter and medical care, and it described conditions in camps as incredibly harsh and unbearable despite aid efforts.
Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi earlier had formally declared Mosul liberated from ISIL.
The United Nations estimates that Mosul needs a year and one billion US dollars in investment just to restore basic services. Long-term rebuilding projects will cost billions more.
According to CGTN’s Toby Muse, there are tens of thousands of people in Mosul waiting to see if the government can tackle a challenge even larger than defeating ISIL, and bringing their city back to life.
