Over the past couple of years, China and Zimbabwe have witnessed stronger economic ties. Last year, bilateral trade amounted to over 1 billion US dollars, 18 percent more compared with the previous year.
China was the biggest buyer of Zimbabwean tobacco, cotton and various minerals. In return, Zimbabwe imported electronics and clothing. China is also Zimbabwe's largest source of investment -- with multi-billion dollar stakes in fields such as aviation, energy, telecommunications and infrastructure. Some notable deals include a multi-million dollar project to help Zimbabwe build up its first batch of solar plants. The Chinese government also pledged 46 million US dollars for the construction of a new parliament building in the capital, and also helped upgrade its international airport in Harare.
