Pakistani police are investigating whether the attack on the Chinese Consulate in Karachi might have been planned in India. Officials say the attackers used a powerful, foreign-made explosive. The separatist group behind the assault opposes the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. CGTN's Danial Khan reports.
They were three attackers, carrying sophisticated weapons. The attack began at 9 in the morning. The Chinese consulate is located at a high security zone in Karachi. One of the first responders was federal minister, Faisal Vawda.
FAISAL VAWDA PAKISTANI FEDERAL MINISTER FOR WATER RESOURCES "There is a play school located at the second lane from the Chinese consulate, where my 2-year-old daughter goes. I was the first one in Pakistan who got the information from the school's principal. I was only five minutes away from the consulate. So I was there. I informed the media, the prime minister, and the law enforcement agencies."
The quick reaction of the Sindh police is being praised on the local media of preventing more casualties and a hostage situation. But the fact remains that there was security and intelligence failure that allowed the attackers to come so close to their target, undetected. Many believe the attack in Karachi indicates that militants still have the capacity to launch an attack at the time and place of their choice. The minister says the separatist Baloch militants, responsible for the attack, will be contained through force. If not, it could greatly undermine Pakistan's economic relations with China. Experts say the state's responses and strategies in fighting militancy will have to change. A high level inquiry under the directives of the prime minister has been launched.
MOAZZAM JAH ANSARI COMMANDANT, FRONTIER CONSTABULARY "We would not like to alert their supporters, helpers, friends and facilitators, and we are going after them and ultimately the entire network will be unearthed."
As the investigation moves forward, the local media says at least 2 suspected facilitators of the attackers have been caught during search operation.
DANIAL KHAN KARACHI "In the wake of the armed attack on Chinese consulate in Karachi, Security has been beefed up at consulates and embassies across the country, Heavy contingents of police and Paramilitary personnel have been deployed, especially around foreign companies operating in the country. Danial Khan, CGTN, Karachi."
