American director Robert Minkoff has been tapped to chair the international competition jury of this year's Beijing International Film Festival, which will kick off this Saturday. Minkoff talked Thursday with Culture Express about his role and idea on the development of Chinese film industry.
A press conference on Thursday unveiled this year's full jury lineup -- Chilean director Silvio Caiozzi, Russian director Sergey Dvortsevoy, British director Simon West, Iranian director Majid Majidi, Chinese director Cao Baoping and Chinese actress Carina Lau. The panel is chaired by Rob Minkoff, who's best known for directing the Academy Award-winning animated feature The Lion King.
15 films will compete for the festival's top Tiantan Award. Minkoff said they would closely evaluate the nominees.
In recent years, the Chinese film industry has seen many co-productions with international filmmakers. Minkoff suggested other approaches in cooperation besides focusing on Chinese cultural elements.
The 8-day Festival will wrap up on April 20th. SW, CGTN.
