One of the best known venues at the Asian Games is the badminton hall in Jakarta. The venue which first opened in 1961, and was renovated last year, has groomed most of the host nation's best-known players. Now a new generation is looking to carry on the venue's long legacy, and contribute to their country's expected medal haul. Damion Jones elaborates.
Badminton's top-ranked men's doubles pairing, Kevin Sukamuljo and Marcus Gideon, have collected 16 titles together since joining forces three years ago, with their efforts helping Indonesia claim team gold at the 2015 Southeast Asian Games, and last season's BAC Finals. Now the reigning BWF Co-Players of the Year are pursuing victory on the continental stage, and have the wind at their backs, even as rivals from countries like China and Malaysia work to take them down.
KEVIN SUKAMULJO 2017 BWF MEN'S CO-PLAYER OF THE YEAR "Our victory has increased our confidence, and that provides important motivation for us, going into the Asian Games."
The indoor shuttlecock, racquet, and net sport remains one of Indonesia's most popular pastimes -- often played on sidewalks and sometimes in the street -- and even earning more affection than swimming, despite the nation being a vast archipelago of more than 17,000 islands.
GATOT DEWO BROTO INDONESIAN MINISTRY OF YOUTH & SPORTS SECRETARY "It looks very difficult to bring the Thomas and Uber Cups home to Indonesia -- because now the competition among the countries especially India, China, South Korea, Japan, as well as Denmark, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia -- it's very tough. That's why Indonesia is not really able anymore to say, 'I'm the winner', that's why later on the Asian Games, the target from badminton at the moment is only one gold medal."
Indonesia might not be living up to its decades of hype as a producer of champions at the moment, but the success of Sukamuljo and Gideon has become a rallying point, with the pair topping the podium at four World Tour stops this season, including the All England Open. And as the continent's leading competitors head to their home hall, the duo nicknamed "The Minions" due to their diminutive heights, will look to tower above the pack, at the 2018 Asian Games.
