This morning, more details were released by South Korea's Unification Ministry on what lies ahead for their relations in 2018. Let's take a look.
It heralded a new era in relations between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and South Korea when Kim Jong Un set foot onto South Korean soil. The historic Kim-Moon summit could spell the dawn of peace on the peninsula. In a press conference on Monday, South Korea's Unification Ministry said the two sides are mulling to change a decades-long armistice deal to a peace agreement.
BAIK TAE-HYUN, SPOKESPERSON SOUTH KOREAN UNIFICATION MINISTRY "The ceasefire treaty will be transformed into a peace treaty as we have reached an agreement with the North."
The DPRK and South Korea have been separated by a heavily-militarized border since the end of the Korean War seven decades ago. When the three-year war ended in 1953, the two countries agreed to a truce agreement but not a peace treaty. The war left around 750,000 people separated from immediate family members, which later became a scar engraved in the hearts of people from both sides.
BAIK TAE-HYUN, SPOKESPERSON SOUTH KOREAN UNIFICATION MINISTRY "The separated family members is a very urgent issue that we attach a great importance to."
The spokesperson said according to the Panmunjom Declaration, Seoul and Pyongyang will launch further discussions to resolve the issue of reunions on the peninsula. Meanwhile, other forms of reunions are on the cards.
BAIK TAE-HYUN, SPOKESPERSON SOUTH KOREAN UNIFICATION MINISTRY "For the Asian Olympic Games in 2018, we have proposed that the North and South may participate as one team."
Sports events have in the past served as a bridge of friendship between the North and South. In January 2018, the two neighbors started unexpected overtures to one another, when Pyongyang announced its willingness to participate in the Winter Olympics held in the South and relations have continued to thaw since then. And after his recent summit with Moon, Kim said his country will close its main nuclear test site in May.
