Relations between China and Russia are said to be at their best point in a century. Could such a partnership bring a breath of fresh air to both sides' economic agendas? We find out from CGTN's Xia Cheng.
Foreign direct investment into Russia is falling. FDI only accounted for zero-point-two percent of Russia's GDP between 2015 and 2018. That's the lowest among all emerging markets, according to the Institute of International Finance. Could China provide extra momentum by investing in Russia?
DAN WANG ECONOMIST, ECONOMIST INTELLIGENCE UNIT "We have an update on the China Going Global Index, Russia is actually high, energy and car market are good opportunities. We have seen Chinese companies especially state owned car firms setting factories in different locations in Russia. Its urban consumers are quite enthusiastic about certain brands of Chinese cars."
XIA CHENG CGTN REPORTER "Besides US sanctions keeping investors at bay, Russia's economy has its own issues. But, there's a growing interest in the technology sector."
LAURA LUO DEPUTY ASIA DIRECTOR, EM "Also on the investment side, we have seen a jump of cross border investment momentum between the two countries this year, so sectors including energy, agriculture and forestry. In these traditional sectors, Russia naturally has advantages, and China has a big appetite in consumption. So they match perfectly well. Besides, technology is a new hot area. We will see a lot happen. A lot is already happening, for example, telecoms, 5G, automated cars."
Russia is making efforts to brighten its investment landscape and renew dialogues with the West. It is pushing for a wider privatization program for the economy, and a number of state-owned companies plan to pay higher dividends for their investors. Many analysts believe Russia has already ridden out the worst of the impact from sanctions and is ready to stimulate capital flow to both the real economy and the financial markets.
