We begin with football, Liverpool's top scorer Mohamed Salah is embroiled in an image rights dispute with the Egyptian Football Association. The E-F-A has allowed some of its sponsors to use photographs of Salah -- violating his sponsorship rights. Now the footballer has turned up the heat on the association, as CGTN's Adel EL Mahrouky explains.
No Egyptian football player came close to the accomplishments Mohmed Salah made in his first season with Liverpool. This rare success story pushed advertisers to fight for attributing their brands to Mo. Billboards of the Premiere League's top scorer have taken over the Egyptian Capital, and televised ads dominated airtime in local channels. According to Salah's agent though, not all of them were authorized.
MOHAMED MOSTAFA, SPORTS ANALYST "The Egyptian Football Association has used Mohamed Salah's photos in numerous advertising campaigns without taking his authorization. Some of them were with competitors to companies Liverpool and Salah have already signed with."
WE is the official telecommunication sponsor of the Egyptian national team. Last march it unraveled its design for the Pharaohs' World Cup airplane.
Salah appeared on one side alone, despite that the Egyptian football Association can only allow sponsors to use his picture among other national team members. That has pushed global telecommunications giant Vodafone to ask Liverpool for millions of dollars in penalty for violating their contract.
Since then Salah tried to approach the EFA with no use.
"Sorry but this is a major insult I was hoping the deal would be classier than this."
MOHAMED MOSTAFA, SPORTS ANALYST "The reaction to Salah's tweet was immense. It exposed the violations the EFA made in the rights of its players. the violation became top news all of the world. It reached the Egyptian presidency, which has assigned the minister of sports and youth Khaled Abdel Aziz to resolve that issue immediately."
The sports minister held an emergency meeting with EFA on Sunday evening. Afterwards he assured the public that all violations against Salah's image rights will be immediately resolved
ADEL EL MAHROUKY, CAIRO, EGYPT "Salah was not the only victim of the EFA's advertising violations. But thanks to his strong fan, base who made the hashtag I support Salah a global trend, the issue was resolved for the other players as well. Now fans want no distractions ahead of the Champions League finals. They also want Mohamed Salah to begin the world cup training camp with a clear mind. AMA CGTN CA."
