Chinese bombers, jet fighters and surveillance aircraft crossed the Tsushima Strait for the first time on Monday to conduct training in international airspace over the Sea of Japan, said Shen Jinke, spokesperson for the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force.
Shen said that according to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, all countries enjoy freedom of navigation and the Air Force flyover in international airspace between the Tsushima Strait and the Sea of Japan for ocean training was "lawful and reasonable."
A PLA Su-30 fighter and an H-6K bomber, along with other multi-type aircraft, took part in the operation to enhance ocean maneuverability.
The Tsushima Strait is the eastern channel of the Korea Strait, which lies between South Korea and Japan, connecting the Sea of Japan, the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea.
