And to South Africa, where we meet a young innovative artist from Pretoria who is turning heads, creating masterpieces with fire. Anathi Nkanyuza combines a technique called fumage or smoke art, with pencils and brushes. Our correspondent Julie Scheier has the story.
24-year-old Anathi "ELPEE" Nkanyuza is a self-taught artist. Known as the man behind the smoke, Elpee uses flames and smoke from candle light to create rare art on paper. Elpee often doesn't know how images will turn out, but the creation process always has an element of random spontaneity.
ANATHI "ELPEE" NKANYUZA ARTIST "I create my smoke art in kind of different ways I use anything that I can find that can produce smoke but my favourite is like candle because, it is different than other mediums that I use and other artists use, when you working with pencil or charcoal or paint brushes you kind of like in control of everything but when you working with smoke, you have to follow it, it is kind of leading you to where you want to go."
Smoke or fumage art was popularized in the late 1930s, by an Austrian artist. Anathi embarked on this medium last year and recently presented his first exhibition, "ARTdiction".
ANATHI "ELPEE" NKANYUZA ARTIST "I decided to use self-portraits on my exhibition because being my first solo exhibition I ever had I thought it more important to tell people who Elpee is I would say it was successful I got commissioned through the exhibition so that is the most important part because it opened doors for me like introducing my work to more audience out there."
Through trial and error, Elpee tries to improve his technique and hopes to establish his medium and attract new audiences.
ANATHI "ELPEE" NKANYUZA ARTIST "My biggest goal is having a number of galleries around the country but my biggest interest is working with the emerging artists because that is where the future lies, so my biggest goal is to give a platform to emerging artists in-the-near-future but at the moment I am focusing on building my brand."
It may look as if Anathi is playing with fire, but he's taking his art to a whole new level. JULIE SCHEIER, CGTN, PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA.
