At the heart of this year's International Horticultural Expo site is a theater with a roof in the shape of a butterfly. It will host the opening and closing ceremonies of the 162-day expo, among other events. CGTN's Wei Lynn Tang has more from the venue.
WEI LYNN TANG BEIJING "Nestled in the Gui Rui Lake Scenic Area across the Chinese Pavilion is this blooming beauty behind me. This multi-purpose Guirui Theatre will host the Expo's opening and closing ceremonies, as well as many cultural activities. It has garnered approval from people who have seen it upfront, who have likened it to Beijing's National Stadium, also known as The Bird's Nest or 2008 Olympics Stadium."
That's from the outside. A sneak peek at the inside – a main stage with two small stages are set with seats that can accommodate more than 14-hundred people.
YE DAHUA DEPUTY DIRECTOR, BEIJING INTL. HORTICULTURAL BUREAU "During the Expo, 25-hundred events have been carefully planned. Among them, the China Pavilion Day, pavilion days of various other countries, the Expo's opening and closing ceremonies, and performances from each Chinese province will be held in this theatre. It's a good platform to promote Chinese traditional and contemporary culture, and an impetus for implementing the construction of the Beijing Cultural Center."
An ultra-thin film structure known as ETFE was used to build the roof. Less than 0.22 millimeters thick, with a total light transmittance of between 20 and 40 percent – not only does the roof structure maximize the use of natural light to achieve a soft lighting effect, it can also avoid excessive colour-interference with the human eye. Meanwhile, the membrane structure is said to have a malleability level of more than 400 percent – enabling it to form various three-dimensional shape designs.
LIU CHANGBAO HEAD OF CONSTRUCTION, GUI RUI THEATRE "From a design point of view, it is mainly a bionic building. In order to embody the shape of a butterfly, we adopted the use of a steel pipe truss structure, with the largest cantilever spanning 47 meters. To embody the veins, we used aluminum alloy wire mesh."
Truly, from above, the Guirui Theatre steals the show – with its eye-catching shape and colours of a butterfly wearing flowers.
It's also in the details underneath these butterfly wings, the meticulous work of workers, who hope to showcase this beauty to welcome thousands of visitors from China and abroad on Opening Night. WLT, CGTN, Beijing.
