Many women in Saudi Arabia are working towards their goal of achieving a driving license. And this driving school for women is a start. Ma Ke has the story.
Located in the north-east in the capital of Riyadh, this is not only the oldest, but also the biggest driving school for women. Students can obtain a license after thirty hours of study, including theory, driving simulation and actual practice.
ABRAR DRIVING INSTRUCTOR "And if they sit in the right way, where should be here, in the middle of eyes. So if it goes like this."
Plenty of practice is necessary before one can get a license, but students here are eager to experience driving. For most of women in Saudi Arabia, it is a fresh experience. In the past, the ban on women drivers was sometimes a burden for the family.
HALA ALOGAIL STUDENT "Sometimes I need to drive to work. It's not only for daily use. If could drive when there is an emergency, like if a family member gets sick and can't find a taxi, then it would be of great help."
In order to meet the demands of an increasing pool of women drivers, the driving school has recruited women driving teachers from over the world. But still, that's far from enough. In the largest women's driving school, more than 300 teachers are helping over thousands of students. And as the country lifts its driving ban for women, more of then now have to wait in line before their journey on the road can start officially.
