Zimbabwe's constitutional court has handed a victory to recently elected president Emmerson Mnangagwa.
A judge dismissed the opposition's challenge, saying last month's vote was rigged, including fake polling stations and more ballots than registered voters. CGTN's Farai Mwakutuya reports.
The decision by the nine justices of Zimbabwe's highest court was unanimous, Emmerson Mnangagwa is the duly elected winner of last months' presidential election and will be sworn on Sunday.
The opposition MDC Alliance had sought the reversal of the result in favor of its candidate Nelson Chamisa or rerun.
It claimed the Zimbabwe electoral commission rigged the vote.
But in its judgment the court noted that the MDC had failed to place before it clear direct and sufficient evidence to support its claims.
FARAI MWAKUTUYA HARARE, ZIMBABWE "It also pointed out that remedies including a recount and unsealing of ballot boxes within 48 hours of the vote, which could have detected the alleged manipulation had not been pursued."
While noting the ruling the MDC said there still remain unanswered questions.
THABANI MPOFU LAWYER, MDC ALLIANCE "Right now we still do not know how many votes ED Mnangagwa managed to garner. Right now the 16,000 votes admitted by ZEC have still not gone away. Right now the 40,000 discrepancy between presidential and parliamentary results has still now gone away."
The ruling ZANU PF has welcomed the ruling as an opportunity for the country to now move on.
PAUL MANGWANA SECRETARY FOR LEGAL AFFAIRS, ZANU PF "It has delayed our celebration but we are happy that justice has been done. We won the election. There was no reason to doubt Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa's victory. He deserved to win, from the day he took office he started campaign by delivering economic prosperity for the people of Zimbabwe and I am sure with this mandate, he will deliver to the people of Zimbabwe a new Zimbabwe as he has said."
He will get the opportunity to begin doing so after he's sworn in as president on Sunday. FM, CGTN, H, Z.
