Cheetah Mobile (CM), the world’s leading Android app developer, announced on Wednesday its cooperation with Microsoft to incorporate the smart virtual assistant Cortana into the CM Launcher app, a step forward to promote the application of artificial intelligence (AI) on the mobile side.
This is also the first time for a mobile launcher app to integrate Cortana, a feature that even Microsoft Launcher itself doesn’t have.

Via the integration, users will be able to enjoy voice controlled experiences powered by Cortana, such as making phone calls, creating a calendar, and translation.
“The partnership with Microsoft fits CM’s mission – Make the World Smarter,” said Fu Sheng, CEO of CM. The company has long started its march in the field of AI, and the cooperation with Microsoft has “expanded the AI application scenarios overseas, providing users abroad with outstanding smart voice service.”

“Microsoft launched Cortana to provide intelligent assistance to help people work efficiently at any time and place in an easier way. The integration of Cortana and CM Launcher will allow more mobile users access to Cortana,” said Jordi Ribas, corporate vice president of AI Products at Microsoft, adding that this is just the first step of the mutual cooperation, and more integration will be established with CM’s products in the future.
CM Launcher is one of the most popular mobile launcher apps at the global Android platform. Over 200 countries and regions including the US, Russia and Brazil have access to it, with a total of nearly 300 million downloads.

CM Launcher is expected to integrate other functions of Cortana, like image identification, knowledge mapping, and smart home service in the future. Users will also be able to change their mobile theme via voice command.
The CM Launcher version with Cortana is now in open beta in the US, the UK, Canada and Australia. The final version will be available in these countries from January, 2018.
