Most people try to avoid coffee stains. But a Nigerian artist is embracing them, finding beauty in the brew. CGTN's Kelechi Emekalam explains.
Visual Artist and Animator - Ekene Ngige is becoming a force to reckon with in the art world.
He's completely drifted from the conventional style of painting. He uses coffee to tell his stories. Coffee is not commonly used by artist around the world-rather a famous beverage consumed globally. So how did Ekene get the idea of an alternative use for coffee?
EKENE NGIGE COFFEE PAINTER "I was having a meeting and I was having a cup of coffee as well. The coffee spilt on my paper and the texture looked very attractive and different. I noticed it immediately I saw it that this was artistic - It just felt good and I didn't want to wipe it off. I left it to dry off to see what the aftermath looked like. It did dry up and I was like someday I'm going to test this on a sketch and see how it comes out. Funny enough my first trial was the bomb."
He says coffee gives a unique brilliance to his artwork.
And unlike other paints, it's also cheap and readily available.
Ekene's themes are based mainly on life events - and lately he has devoted his works to peace and children in violent conflicts.
EKENE NGIGE COFFEE PAINTER "For the past 2 years, I've been working on a particular project right now and it's been on the violence that the whole world has been going through - especially Nigeria itself. In recent months, it's been horrible. from crisis with Fulani herdsmen to Boko Haram here and there -- innocent lives have been in danger especially the children, nobody is considering them and all that so it's been one disaster to the other."
Although Coffee painting could be monochromatic - working with a single color, but for Ekene its potential has been limitless.
Like every other water colour art work, the coffee painting has a life span of between 50 to 100 years. But Ekene has discovered new and innovative ways of preserving his paintings to last as long as forever.
He hopes to advance the art of coffee painting far beyond the shores of Nigeria - to the world over.
