From 2014’s New Year Address to this year’s, from catchy gem quotes to firm New Year resolutions, the messages President Xi has sent out are important, but what also grabs the attention of millions and stirs heated discussions every year are the photos he has in the office and what signals they send.
This year, 15 photos were spotted in the office, where he has given four New Year Addresses – 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2018. Nine of them were put up in 2017. Let’s take a look.

1. Xi inspects Xinzhou, Shanxi Province

4. Xi visits revolutionary historical site of CPC
President Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, led other members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee to review the oath of the CPC when visiting the site where the first CPC National Congress was held in 1921, in Shanghai, east China, on October 31, 2017.
Xi led the other six members of the Standing Committee – Li Keqiang, Li Zhanshu, Wang Yang, Wang Huning, Zhao Leji and Han Zheng – to the sites. In 1921, the delegates representing about 50 CPC members nationwide convened the first CPC National Congress in late July in Shanghai, but moved to a boat on Nanhu Lake in Jiaxing of east China's Zhejiang Province due to the harassment of local police.

5. Xi honors military officers unit ahead of China’s Army Day
Three days ahead of China’s Army Day, Xi Jinping (C), also chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC) and General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, posed for a group photo with the 10 military officers who are awarded the Order of Bayi, the country's highest military award in Beijing on July 28, 2017. Those received the honor included astronaut Jing Haipeng, the commander of the Shenzhou-11 spacecraft.

6. Xi inspects military formations in celebration of PLA 90th founding anniversary
On the last day of July 2017, President Xi Jinping inspected military formations at Zhurihe training base in northern China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region as the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) celebrated the 90th anniversary of its founding. This was the first-ever military parade conducted in celebration of “Chinese Army Day” which falls on August 1.

7. Xi visits border troops ahead of Chinese Lunar New Year
On January 26, 2014, only days ahead of 2014’s Chinese lunar new year, Xi Jinping flew to north China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region from Beijing and visited garrison soldiers in the border of Chinese-Mongolia. He praised the border troops' efforts in safeguarding national safety, saying “China and Chinese people will never forget you.”

Xi Jinping first used the term “targeted poverty alleviation” as he visited Shibadong village in central China’s Hunan Province on December 3, 2013.
