China has on Tuesday urged the US to stop distorting Beijing’s strategic intentions and abandon Cold War thinking, and zero-sum mindset.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said at a press conference such moves will only bring harm to both sides.
The remarks came after US President Donald Trump released a new national security strategy which labels countries such as China and Russia, "revisionist" powers, determined to reshape the world according to their own ideas.
Hua said that China and the US share important responsibilities and common interests in upholding world peace and stability.
She also said it was important that both countries respect each other's core interests and strategic concerns to find constructive ways to get along.
"China hopes the US could follow the trend of the times. This is the only right and viable choice for the steady development of our relations and the interests of people around the world," Hua added.
