Senior Chinese defense official Colonel Zhou Bo, who is now in London, says a modernized navy, as called for by President Xi Jinping, is needed to help protect China's overseas interests.
"I think he has clearly sent a strong message to have the navy built into a stronger one. In that regards, Navy would certainly play a much important role. As a result, officers and sailor are becoming more experienced internationally."
Colonel Zhou added that US sailings in the South China Sea are provocative.
