Global experts and scholars have also criticized the US tariff policy, saying such measures would harm the world trade system.
PAOLO VON SCHIRACH FOUNDER AND EDITOR, SCHIRACH REPORT "And if that's the product that's hit by tariffs, who gets hurt? Well, low-income American consumers, more broadly, you have large American multinational corporations that have complex supply chains, some of which of course involve Chinese components, and therefore, those companies also get hit because it's the final product may be made in the US, but if some critical components are made in China, and therefore there is surcharge in terms of the tariffs that administration is likely to impose, but that will be reflected eventually in the prices."
MARTIN JACQUES BRITISH SCHOLAR "This is a bad turn of events, for China, for the US, and for the global economy. The global economy has benefited from free trade, there is no doubt about that. The rise of the developing world has greatly benefited, including China, but not only China, from free trade. Any attack on free trade, any restrictions on global economy, are going to be detrimental."
NELSON CRUZ HEAD OF TRADING OREY FINANCIAL SPAIN "This will not only affect the two trading countries, but also affect global trade. If we cease trade imports or exports, the demands for goods still exist, so substitutes will have to be found, which will cause trade imbalance globally."
CLAUDIA DANGON SCHOLAR, PONTIFICIA UNIVERSIDAD JAVERIANA "The world chose a road of free trade more than ten years ago, which is comprehensive and far-reaching. The US is the first largest trade partner of many Latin American countries for some time previously, but not today. We are also seeking methods in economy and trade in response to the uncertainties of US policies."
