The Egyptian presidential race has officially started. Two candidates are in the running. Incumbent President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is standing for a second term, while a former ally, Moussa Mostafa Moussa, is up against him. Until a few weeks ago, Moussa was a vocal supporter of el-Sisi. Adel EL Mahrouky has more.
A slick, well-organised media briefing by Abdel Fattah EL Sisi's campaign team.
Compared with a somewhat chaotic conference for Moussa Mostafa Moussa. It's an open secret: the gap between the two candidates is enormous. The streets are starting to fill up with el-Sisi's election posters, while Moussa is almost invisible.
MAHMOUD SAAD EL DIN DOMESTIC POLITICS CHIEF, YOUM7 "You need to understand there's a great difference in the capacity of the two campaign teams. el-Sisi is coming in from a presidential term - his achievements give him a solid foundation on which to base his campaign. Moussa, on the other hand, submitted his application at the last minute, leaving him little time for preparation. Some are saying his only role is to make the election appear competitive. It's not clear who's supporting him."
The National Elections Commission has declared campaign season open. But many analysts - and ordinary Egyptians -- believe el-Sisi's victory is inevitable.
MAHMOUD SAAD EL DIN DOMESTIC POLITICS CHIEF, YOUM7 "Moussa himself has said in several media interviews that el-Sisi has his vote. We've been monitoring opinion polls - they're all in favour of the current president. Every day dozens of campaign events are organised by various groups supporting el-Sisi. On the contrary, all we get from Moussa's team is a statement every other day."
The campaigning period lasts a month, with voting scheduled to take place on the 26th of March.
ADEL EL MAHROUKY CAIRO, EGYPT "The results of the election aren't likely to be a surprise. This race though is not about who will win, it's more about what the president will promise to deliver to Egyptians during the next four years. AMA CGTN CA".
