The annual "Mini Music Festival" returns to the Shanghai Concert Hall on Thursday for three days of performances. The lineup includes concerts by Hamburger Ratsmusik, Europa Galante and The Gentleman's Band, as well as three lectures about European music during the 16th and 17th centuries. Huang Yuanqing reports.
Founded in the 16th century, Hamburger Ratsmusik was once a leading Baroque orchestra in its time until classicism took over after the 18th century. The orchestra was revived in 1991 when about 30 records of early music were released. This time they brought three antique Baroque instruments with them for the performance.
Friday night, recorder player Stefan Temmingh will join soprano Dorothee Mields and the Gentleman's Band in presenting a concert named "Birds in Baroque". Europa Galante will perform some of composer Antonio Vivaldi's works on Saturday.
Back for its sixth year, the organizer hopes the spectators could learn more about Baroque music while fully enjoying the works.
YE FEI, DEPUTY MANAGER ARTS PROMOTION CENTER, SH CONCERT HALL "I think the most important thing is to experience and enjoy the concert instead of trying to figure out the meaning and other things behind the music. Aside from the concert, we'll also host many activities over the weekend for people to appreciate the customs, etiquette, culture and history of the age of Baroque."
Launched in 2013, the Mini Music Festival is designed to provide a deeper understanding of music by focusing on one particular genre each year.
