China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that China opposes any official interaction or military contact between the US and Taiwan, following a defense act that could see American warships visit the island.
The US House of Representatives passed the National Defense Authorization Act For Fiscal Year 2018 on Friday, which contains controversial provisions about re-establishing regular ports of call by the US Navy at Kaohsiung or any other suitable ports in Taiwan and permitting US Pacific Command to receive ports of call by Taiwan.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said that provisions related to Taiwan seriously violate the One-China policy and the three China-US joint communiques.
China has lodged a protest with Washington and urged the US to prevent the act passing into law.
