Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas held talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah EL Sisi in Cairo on Sunday, where the two leaders discussed the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
According to CGTN’s Yasser Hakim, the meeting focused on how Israeli expansionist activities on Palestinian land could be countered.
According to an official statement, the two leaders discussed efforts to stop the ongoing construction of Israeli settlements and reviving the stalling peace process. Both sides are willing to support a US initiative for peace.
Mediation efforts between Palestinian factions are also on the table. The two largest Palestinian entities, Fatah and Hamas, have been clashing over power sharing for nearly a decade. These differences have weakened the Palestinian position in talks with the Israelis. Egypt is mediating to avoid an escalation of the existing tension between the two sides.
The ongoing Palestinian-Israeli conflict has lasted for decades, and many Arab leaders are now stepping up efforts to solve the crisis. They believe a resolution could open the door for ending other regional disputes.
