Huawei, the Shenzhen-based telecommunications giant is the world's third-largest smartphone seller and the largest supplier of network equipment. It is currently focusing on developing the "5G" wireless network to assist Artificial Intelligence-driven machines.
The US has regularly hindered Huawei's efforts to enter America, citing national security concerns. But Huawei has global ambitions and is pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into developing a next-generation "5G" wireless network, which promises to expand transmitting capabilities important for AI-driven machines which transmit vast amounts of data in real time.
Huawei says they're developing them in tandem with new AI-driven smartphones, which they envision will transform the way people take pictures and go about their daily lives.
Meanwhile, tech giant Baidu is developing autonomous cars, convinced that its AI software can be applied to vehicles. And at iFlytek, researchers have developed voice recognition software so powerful that it can translate speech in real time.
China's AI ambitions have many American competitors on edge. As trade tensions escalate between China and the US, Huawei is focused on shifting expansion towards Europe and Asia, and has employed over three hundred engineers, many of whom used to work at Nokia.
