China's Political Season: Active senior citizens on modern reforms
[]
Much of the talk over the past couple of weeks has focused on economic growth, the prospects for young people, and where the nation is heading. Now while the country's senior citizens won't be around to take advantage of today's enterprise, they are nevertheless following proceedings in Beijing with great interest and pride. CGTN's Sean Callebs has more.
This is a senior center here in Beijing, where a number of different activities go on and we are in one classroom teaching, calligraphy.
SEAN CALLEBS BEIJING "It was actually started by a former physician, -who after years of treating people physically, Zhang Zhuanling decided she wanted to help elderly mentally so, she started this facility. As I mentioned about a dozen different activities. I am going focus on calligraphy. Learn the very basics, now joining me will be my teacher Li Laoshi -which Li my teachers."
"This is brush. This is black ink. Then I begin to write. Great Virtue promotes growth, so we are going to learn that now. This is very good, can I try now? While I doing this we also want to hear from some other senior citizens here about China and its reforms."
ZHANG ZHUANLING SENIOR CENTER ORGANIZER "Our country is getting stronger and stronger and people are enjoying very favorable policies — the senior citizens are happy too."
SONG JUNFEN SENIOR CITIZEN "China needs to develop and it needs talents. High technology is what drives China's developments. So it relies on young people."
AN FUGANG SENIOR CITIZEN "China's traditional culture has been inherited because calligraphy has been passed on. Because of cultivation of culture, China has also developed as its technologies advance. China has been developing fast, especially since the reform and opening up. China has made achievements in many areas."
SONG JUNFEN SENIOR CITIZEN "Only the young people can keep up with the times, and innovate —only then can China keep its hopes up."
ZHANG ZHUANLING SENIOR CENTER ORGANIZER "The senior citizens are very happy too. Even though we are retired — we should still contribute to the country. I hope our country can get stronger and more prosperous."
And this is the finished product. These characters were done by Laoshi, my teacher. They mean great virtue. And, here —my stab at making the same two characters —maybe not a great virtue, but perhaps a good effort.
SEAN CALLEBS BEIJING "Well the seniors we spoke with that at this facility say they are very invested in China's future. Where it goes, the economic progress, the reforms —and bringing the young students who are studying overseas back to China. The seniors here say, while they are a big part of making China what it is today —the best and the brightest will have a big say in where China goes. Sean Callebs, CGTN, Beijing."
