The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Tuesday moved closer to an agreement that will allow Paris and Los Angeles to each host one of the 2024 and 2028 Olympic Games. Which city will host which Games is undecided for now, with both preferring 2024.
Four of the contenders to host the 2024 Olympics – Hamburg, Rome, Budapest and Boston – had withdrawn their bids, scared off by the size and cost of the Games. The IOC then recommended the double awarding to make it more attractive for potential hosts.
Both Paris and Los Angeles have hosted the Olympic Games, and require no new temporary facilities. The double rewarding leaves no chance for other cities to compete for the 2028 Games.
IOC President Thomas Bach said this fulfills the Olympic Agenda 2020. It called for reduced costs for bidding by decreasing the number of presentations allowed, and providing a significant financial contribution from the IOC.
