People pay respects on Myanmar Martyrs’ Day

This year marks the 70th anniversary of Martyrs' Day in Myanmar.
On July 19, Aung San Suu Kyi paid her respects to her father, independence hero General Aung San, in the former capital, Yangon.
People from around the country also visited the Ministers’ Building where General Aung San was assassinated. The general has remained a powerful force in Myanmar's politics since his death.
General Aung San's image has been used by both Suu Kyi and her political rivals to garner legitimacy and popular support among a public that still largely reveres him.
