In Hawaii, a volcanic eruption has taken a new, more dangerous turn. Hot lava is threatening one of the island's largest power plants, where it could potentially cause supplies of chemicals to explode. CGTN's Wang Meng has more.
WANG MENG HAWAII COUNTY, HAWAII "From this point where I am standing and south to the coast, is the most affected area of the volcano eruption. You can see police checking IDs to allow only residents in. But a more urgent mission for local authorities is to help more people to evacuate. The volcano erupted again on Tuesday morning, and the lava flow is now threatening a geothermal power plant on the island. Flammable chemicals are stored at the plant, and authorities fear a potential explosion. Another immediate threat for people here is the so-called Laze in the atmosphere. That's a combination of lava and haze. As lava pours into the ocean, it creates a steam of hydrochloric acid mixed with fine particles of volcanic glass. And that's extremely hazardous to breathe - as well as irritating on your skin - or in your eyes. I saw a lot of this when I was in a helicopter, taking aerial shots on Monday. Certainly, the people of the Big Island have lived with the reality of a volcano for a long time Kilauea has been active for 35 years. But this new phase of heightened activity is impacting more populated areas - and reminding all here of nature's supreme power over man. Wang Meng, CGTN, America."
