George and Amal Clooney are donating one million US dollars to fight hate groups.
The couple announced Tuesday that their Clooney Foundation for Justice is supporting the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) with a 1 million US dollar grant to combat hate groups in the United States.
The donation comes after the Charlottesville demonstration between neo-Nazis and white supremacists and anti-fascist counter-protesters in the country.
"What happened in Charlottesville, and what is happening in communities across our country, demands our collective engagement to stand up to hate," George Clooney said in a statement.
Clooney said they wanted to add their voices and financial assistance to the fight for equality. “There are no two sides to bigotry and hate.”
Southern Poverty Law Center President Richard Cohen thanked the Clooneys for "standing with us at this critical moment in our country's fight against hate."
Founded in 1971, the SPLC monitors the activities of more than 1,600 extremist groups in the US and has used litigation to win judgments against white supremacist organizations.
Earlier, Apple CEO Tim Cook also announced that the company will send 1 million US dollars to the SPLC along with other Silicon Valley executives.
