German Chancellor Angela Merkel finished her trip to China on Friday. Shenzhen was her last stop in the country. Sun Ye explains why this city was chosen.
SUN YE SHENZHEN "German Chancellor Merkel wrapped up her 11th visit to China here in Shenzhen. This is an incredibly clean and efficient city where public transportation runs almost entirely on electricity and renewable energy. More importantly, it's China's technology powerhouse, home to innovative giants like Tencent, genetics firm BGI, and drone-maker DJI. The German chancellor had said several times she wanted to learn more about technology here, and she definitely got her taste, as a two-year-old start-up showed her gadgets that can measure blood pressure, muscle strength, and gives fitness advice. And here, Merkel saw how innovative ideas are hatched so quickly. Part of the answer is in the bigger picture.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening up. Shenzhen was one of the pilot zones that developed thanks to those policies. What used to be a fishing village is now a major metropolis that stands in as China's Silicon Valley. We've been talking to companies here and they say the government's responsiveness and drive to propel growth, as well as measures aimed at encouraging development, are products of China's opening up. Merkel has been known to have the ability to find the right city to visit that captures China's Zeitgeist during her multiple visits to the country. And this time is no exception. SY, CGTN, Shenzhen."
