China's energy supply is gradually shifting to clean and renewable sources for sustainable growth. The government's support for various new energy development has been paying off. Let's take a look.
China's energy sector is undergoing a revolution with increased utilization of clean energy. Clean energy is different from carbon energy as it causes less environmental impact. The percentage of clean energy in China's total energy supply climbed to about 20 percent by the end of 2016 from 14.5 percent in 2012. China is leading the world's solar power development. With strong policy support, total solar power supply surged to 66 billion kilowatts in 2016 from 3.5 billion in 2012. The latest data shows solar power contributed 1.7 percent to total electricity supply in the first eight months of last year compared to less-than-0.1 percent in 2012.
Nuclear power is another source of energy with growing market share. The electricity generated by nuclear power plants amounted to 210 billion kilowatts in 2016. That's more than double the figure in 2012.
China has also been pushing infrastructure construction for the transportation of liquefied natural gas. The total length of pipeline grew to 68 thousand kilometers in 2016, up from 55 thousand in 2012. The number of LNG terminals doubled from 2012 to 2016.
Meanwhile, another revolution is happening to China's auto market with increased popularity for electric cars. The compound growth rate of electric car sales stood at more than 100 percent from 2012 to 2016. The market attracted not only traditional automakers but also new entrants with Internet backgrounds. Besides numerous front players, China also has a number of companies that specialize in key technologies such as battery and motor manufacturing.
