Some who have already made a career out of technology are helping others toward that same goal in this fast-moving digital age. With APEC emphasizing the future of the digital world, one e-commerce expert is helping those like her gain an edge in the lucrative sector. CGTN's Liu Yang introduces us to her.
Opening an online shop brings with it excitement and suspense. No matter what one wants to sell, they're likely to find potential buyers in this big digital world.
Reka, from Papua New Guinea, is a mother of two, and the executive director of an auto company.
Her enthusiasm for online shopping led her to Beijing-based DHGate.com, where she was accepted as a trainee.
REKA PAKE E-COMMERCE GURU "At the beginning, you think that uploading your own photo and doing something like this will be a huge step really have to go through some difficult process. But after the course, I have just realized it is so simple, with click of your button, you can have your shop uploaded, that is really amazing."
Today, Reka offers a training course through a cross-border e-commerce program linked to DH Gate. It unites government resources, industry players, and local E-commerce associations. It also allows small and medium-sized businesses better access to global markets through e-commerce; while at the same time connecting them with economic leaders across the APEC region.
WANG SHUTONG DHGATE.COM "In the past 6-7 years, we showed the world China's small and medium-sized enterprises how to make use of cross-border e-commerce success towards the global market."
Reka says empowering women is her goal. She has brought ample e-commerce experience back to PNG. For many full-time workers looking for a new way to provide for their families, the free training and services Reka offers are highly welcomed.
SONIA AIHI TRAINEE "Not just for women but for men, to set up a bright future for myself and for my kids."
VEARI LUA TRAINEE "I think it is important for my children. I would like to teach them and let them teach others."
For them, the process has just begun. The main focus of the cross-border e-commerce training program is to empower more people.
LIU YANG PORT MORESBY, PNG "So Reka, in Beijing your ambition was to set up a platform for women in PNG to teach them about e-commerce, help them sell products, and raise their income. Now you have fulfilled your dreams. What would you tell your children about your ambition?"
REKA PAKE "I'll help them to see that anything is possible, and you never give up, and you just need to keep on trying and going, no matter how many times you knocked out. I want to tell my children is that technology is everything. It's the future of our country."
Improving infrastructure, and people's livelihoods across the Asia Pacific region were among the goals of this year's APEC meeting.
As Reka and her new friends say - the future will be as bright as the sun in Papua New Guinea. Liu Yang CGTN, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
