One of the key sidebar events on the opening day of the Boao Forum is called "70 and 40 Years in Retrospect: China in a New Era". It was 70 years ago that the Peoples Republic of China was established. Over 40 years ago, China launched its reform and opening up policy. CGTN reporter Cui Hui'ao takes us to Hainan and talks with some of the big names from around the world in attendance.
CUI HUI'AO BOAO, HAINAN PROVINCE "70 years and 40 years: the key terms at this forum, filled with big names, with the central question being as the world realizes China's rapid growth is undoubtedly one of the most significant developments in history: many ask what has China's development brought itself and the rest of the world?"
GLORIA MACAPAGAL ARROYO FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE PHILIPPINES "The truth that there is no single path to development. Previously it was western-style capitalism, but China showed a new path and it made the rest of the world realize that each country can seek its own path based on its own historical experience and circumstances."
FRANCOIS HOLLANDE FORMER PRESIDENT OF FRANCE "I think several factors can explain China's achievements, such as the government's long-term vision - it chose to reform and open up, and join the world. It keeps self-adjusting and self-defining. Now China is not only the manufacturing powerhouse, but also has a big impact on global economic growth."
CUI HUI'AO BOAO, HAINAN PROVINCE "So looking ahead, how should China interact with the world? Years from now, how will the world view China? Speakers say countries around the globe should better accept China's model, while China should dedicate itself to addressing its challenges."
FRANCOIS HOLLANDE FORMER PRESIDENT OF FRANCE "China faces a number of challenges right now such as an aging population, maintaining economic growth and fighting climate change. Chinese people aspire for better lives and more social justice. This is also in line with the Chinese government's will."
GLORIA MACAPAGAL ARROYO FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE PHILIPPINES "China is a market for developing countries, a donor, and a source of technology."
LONG YONGTU FORMER CHINESE VICE MINISTER OF FOREIGN TRADE & ECONOMIC COOPERATION "China needs to become a country of innovation in order to maintain its accumulated advantage. For example, protecting intellectual property rights will help China itself. Carrying on the momentum of reform will lead China forward."
