Installations, videos, visual art, robots, lights and sounds, are all coming together in the Holographia: 2018 International Intermedia Art Festival. Recently held in Beijing, the festival sees some 80 artists showcasing their media convergence ideas in over a hundred works exhibited.
In the three blocks of the exhibition, art works are shown in various forms, such as performing installations, experimental videos, a writing robot, and cyborgs.
HONG DAJUN CURATOR, 2018 INT'L INTERMEDIA ART FESTIVAL "In the cyborg block, we have a dozen works on show. This work uses laser and smoke to show a meeting in the universe, and it's called 'Wander in Space'. This is a very important work, which shows a future writing project. We use artificial intelligence to write poems. It can write love poems, and can also write obscure modern poems. It has actually analyzed the grammar of major poets and imitated them. It's imitating human beings, but what if it stops learning one day? That will happen sooner or later."
"This is a recent film by artist Christian. There's a line in the film saying 'In the future intelligent city, what you pay is not tax, but your data.' The society needs you to hand over your data. This is a major tone of this work."
In a VR piece called "Trembling Meme", which looks like a room full of mirrors, a spaceman runs on smartphones. The spaceman represents humans, who are watching or using the phone.
HONG DAJUN CURATOR, 2018 INT'L INTERMEDIA ART FESTIVAL "How long is the life of a picture or a video? In an instant with a stroke of a finger, it's actually consumed and will disappear. The cyborg part mainly discusses the operational methods of media itself, as well as introspection and even criticism."
Catch-22: A Connection is set against the backdrop of World War Two. There was a rule among the American pilots that only psychotics can leave the war field.
MA YUANCHI NARRATOR, CATCH-22: A CONNECTION "You have to apply and prove yourself that you are psychotic. So it became a trap. In the first zone, we set 11 scenes, in the form of models. And in the second zone, we define it as a scene of dreams and death. There're four bodies in it. We can see the model is no longer the most important factor, it becomes an installation. A magical space is adopted in the third zone. It's formed by arcades. The space artists designed this under our explanation of the texts. We never consider restrictions. For example, there's only one exit of the space, it's not a problem. We think the more restrictions there are, the more creativity there will be."
"Render Ghost" is a ceremonial theatre, designed in two stages. Audiences experience the first stage with VR equipment. They see a lot of ruins while walking around stairs. And in the second stage, they experience the trip again without VR.
HONG DAJUN CURATOR, 2018 INT'L INTERMEDIA ART FESTIVAL "There are actually no real holographic works in the exhibition. We only use the idea, to write from multiple angles, dimensions and directions. Writing is creation, and it emphasizes connections - connecting the past, present and future, breaking the barriers among different media forms, and breaking the model of ideology. We combine art creations of different methods and media, to show the strong creativity of our School of Intermedia Art."
