The US Commerce Department has banned American companies from sensitive products to China's telecommunications firm ZTE for the next seven years. But some Chinese experts say this will not put a brake on the development of the country's high-tech industry. Yang Zhao has more.
China has had an active role in the assembly, processing and manufacturing of high tech products that are then sold across the globe. But the country is now eyeing higher goals, as it tries to change this scenario from "Made in China" to "Made by China". The US ban has snarled up the global supply chain, with the aim of hindering China's innovation process. But some experts say the move can instead be viewed as accelerating it.
WANG CHANGLIN, EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT INSTITUTE OF MACROECONOMICS, NDRC "As long as we turn pressure into motivation, continue indigenous innovation, and push our industry to the middle and high end, we will surely make breakthroughs on China's integrated circuits, including chips and operating systems."
This optimism does not come without reason. China's R&D process has already achieved some early-stage results.
WANG CHANGLIN, EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT INSTITUTE OF MACROECONOMICS, NDRC "We have made huge progress in the Research and Development and industrialization of integrated circuits and operating systems. A relatively complete industrial system has been constructed. If we rely on our own domestic demand market and cultivate an autonomous industry, a core industry will soon become a reality."
Analysts say China's high-tech industry is now in a period of rapid growth. In 2017, China's mobile phones production accounted for 75 percent of the total globally. Meanwhile, computers accounted for 95 percent, and for home appliances, the number is 85 percent. Washington's restrictions on exports of key technologies to China will also inevitably hit the electronic information industries in countries like the US itself, Japan, and South Korea. As China's economic development shifts to a high-quality development stage, with huge potential for domestic demand, China's high-tech industry will continue to maintain rapid growth.
