Academy Award winner Denzel Washington has teamed up with director Antoine Fuqua for a fourth time in "The Equalizer 2", following their successful collaborations on "Training Day," "The Magnificent Seven," and the first "Equalizer". In this new film, Washington stars as a sort of dark angel who comes down to serve justice to people who deserve it. But in real life, he says he never wants to seek revenge.
Denzel Washington is Lyft driver Robert McCall, who also happens to be a skillful, trained killer who at any point can appear out of nowhere and force someone into choosing the right path in life.
ANTOINE FUQUA DIRECTOR, "THE EQUALIZER 2" "Most people, he gives a chance to do the right thing, that's part of his mantra, right? But these guys hurt a friend and did something horrible to her, to Susan. It makes it very personal and for a guy like him, that thing is always in him and he suppresses that thing the violence, but that's what he knows, that's what he's been taught, that's what he's learned. It's hard to keep that monster down, but when you do something that personal to a person like this, it's going to eventually find its way out. Some people need to be dealt with that way, and that's what happens in this case."
But on a personal level, Washington doesn't act in a form of vengeance to seek justice.
DENZEL WASHINGTON ACTOR, "THE EQUALIZER 2" "You know, I don't want revenge. If it's somebody that I don't need in my life, then I need to leave them alone. If we've gotten to the place, where I need revenge then I hung around too long."
"Moonlight" star Ashton Sanders was able to build a mentorship-level relationship with Washington, during the on-screen bonding process of the two characters.
"Narcos" and "Game of Thrones" star Pedro Pascal comes on board as one of McCall's former work partners. Pascal was excited to play opposite Washington in a high-intensity thriller and compared the action sequences to some of his other work calling this one more realistic.
PEDRO PASCAL ACTOR, "THE EQUALIZER 2" "There's a kind of realism to this sort of action that obviously is very different from that of 'Game of Thrones' and something like 'Kingsman' or 'The Great Wall' that I did with Matt Damon. A little bit more in line with a series like 'Narcos,' where you feel the impact of violence. You feel the justice that is taking place sometimes very gruesomely."
One of the film's most gruesome action sequences includes McCall's friend Susan, played by fellow Oscar-winner Melissa Leo. This is one of the main reasons McCall is seeking justice.
MELISSA LEO ACTRESS, "THE EQUALIZER 2" "It's actually really important within the understanding of the film and the watching of it, that what you're seeing is not a woman being beaten, but a woman fighting because she's been attacked, and a woman with some skills responding to a surprise attack by two guys. That's what you see in the movie"
"The Equalizer 2" opens in US theaters this Friday. YR, CGTN.
