"I want them to be safe," says Yang Shu, Executive Deputy Director of the Consular Assistance and Protection Center at China's Foreign Ministry, about those whom he has helped evacuate from dangerous zones around the globe.
As a life-saving diplomat, he has been at the fore of high-profile evacuations of Chinese and foreign nationals from Libya in 2011, Yemen in 2015 and South Sudan in 2016.
He and a 400-strong team devote themselves to guaranteeing the safety of Chinese nationals overseas.
On one occasion, he and his team faced a life-or-death race against time to save a Chinese boy in Indonesia, who desperately needed a blood transfusion.
