Southern China's Guangzhou city is renowned as a popular Chinese destination for African businessmen and students. Among expats living in the city, some African youths are dedicating themselves to voluntary social work. CGTN's He Weiwei has more.
Aunt Wang, as she's known, lives in downtown Guangzhou. Today she's expecting social workers for a visit. Among them there is a different face.
20-year-old Michel is from the Democratic Republic of Congo. He came to Guangzhou in 2016. Now he's a volunteer at a community service center. Visiting the local elderly population is a routine.
WANG ZONGMIN GUANGZHOU RESIDENT "It's great to have them here! Young people are busy, to have them visit me brings me great happiness."
MICHEL MUSAMPA TSHIMBOMBO FOREIGN SOCIAL WORK VOLUNTEER "I like visiting seniors. She's happy, I'm happy too."
Reporter: Just now you chatted with Aunt Wang, could you understand what she said? Michel: Yes Reporter: Everything? Michel: Yes. Reporter: Your Chinese is so good! Michel: Just so so. Reporter: Where did you learn Chinese? Michel: At the community service center.
This center offers social services for both Chinese and expats living nearby. For foreigners, it provides free Chinese classes on workdays.
MBUINGA LOUISHA JEAN STUDENT FROM DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO "I've been learning Chinese for ten months. I like the class, it's free, I can ask teachers many questions."
Located in a foreigner-friendly neighborhood already home to many Africans, this center provides them one-stop services including legal consultations, house rental registrations and so forth. Foreigners are welcome here not only to look for services, but also to volunteer.
WANG HAIGE, DIRECTOR FOREIGNERS SERVICE CENTER AT DENGFENG SUBDISTRICT, GUANGZHOU CITY "We have eight foreign social work volunteers, six of them are from Africa. For foreign new comers to Guangzhou, we'll visit them at their houses to introduce local regulations and policies. If there are only Chinese social workers there, maybe the expats won't listen. But when we have foreign volunteers to communicate with them, it'll save more time and be more efficient."
According to official data, there are 82 thousand foreigners registered to live in Guangzhou. Service centers like this one are trying to help them fit into local surroundings. HWW, CGTN, GZ.
