Saturday marks World Elephant Day, and a British artist is marking the occasion by putting on display 12 life-size paintings of endangered animals that he spent 18 years to complete.
Artist Omra Sian's work depicts endangered animals from the African Savannahs to the Arctic on an epic scale.
The works range through the icy wastes of Siberia to the tropical forests of Sumatra. To commemorate World Elephant Day, Omri has created a magnificent bull elephant standing at seven meters high with the hope of raising awareness about the aggressive poaching of these giant creatures.
Governments around the world are moving against the trade in ivory. A few weeks ago, a million US dollars’ worth of ivory artwork was destroyed in New York’s Central Park. In Malaysia, ivory hauls follow police raids and in China the government’s moving to a total ban on the trade by the end of the year.
