Our Story: Chinese policeman risks life to save resident from fire

The story of a phone call between a Chinese police officer and his wife, during a fire rescue mission, has deeply touched many people. The policeman thought it would be the last time he'd talk to his wife, but fortunately, it was not. Zheng Chunying has today's Our Story.
On the morning of Nov 6, a fire broken out in a residential building in Ziliujing District of Zigong City, southwest China's Sichuan Province.
At that time, Luo Qingfeng, a member of the public security bureau was on patrol along with his colleague.
Realizing there might be people trapped by the blaze, Luo ran into the building without any hesitation.
LUO QINGFENG, POLICEMANPUBLIC SECURITY BUREAU, ZILIUJING DISTRICT "The second floor of the building was on fire. It was very strong and had already spread to the third floor. The smoke was really thick. I was very worried and there was only one thought in my mind, saving people."
When Luo was trying to locate the apartment, he heard a woman calling for help from upstairs. Rushing through thick chocking smoke, Luo reached the sixth floor where a resident named Yang Kaifen was trapped. Luo grabbed Yang and tried to bring her to safety, but it was too difficult to move because the dense smoke had practically reduced visibility to zero. They were forced to go to the balcony for temporary shelter.
LUO QINGFENG, POLICEMAN PUBLIC SECURITY BUREAU, ZILIUJING DISTRICT "The two of us were forced to get down to the floor and crawl with our hands and knees while covering our mouths with damp towels, but the towels weren't much of a help any more. Every second I tried to breathe, I choked on the hot dense smoke. I felt extremely awful and had piercing pains in my lungs."
While pacifying Yang who was on the edge of a breakdown and even tried to jump from the balcony, Luo made phone calls to ask for help. Minutes later, firefighters arrived and found Luo and Yang. Luo gave the only respirator to the woman and asked her to go first.
YANG KAIFEN RESCUED RESIDENT "The rescuers came and wanted to save me first. I told them to save Luo first because he is younger. But Luo said no and insisted that it was their duty to save me first and rushed me away."
While waiting for help, Luo received what he had thought would be the last phone call he'd get from his wife.

Fortunately, Luo was eventually brought to safety and is now out of danger after medical treatment. Luo said he never regretted his decision at that moment because it is his responsibility to protect people. ZHENG CHUNYING CGTN.
