Eight people, including a Chinese national, were killed, and four others were injured after a coal mine collapsed in Minbu, Myanmar’s Magway Region on Monday, according to the Chinese embassy in Myanmar.
The collapse was caused by the explosion of a pipe that pumped oxygen into the mine, which also caused the mine’s walls to cave in at a depth between 80 and 120 meters.
According to the local fire department, some of the victims were crushed, while others suffocated.
Three other Chinese nationals were also injured in the accident and were discharged after being hospitalized.
Six of the eight bodies have been recovered, while the last two are still trapped inside, including the Chinese national.
The Chinese embassy in Myanmar sent delegations to the scene as soon as they were aware of the accident, and will follow the accident closely.
