China's legislators have submitted 51 percent more motions to the annual National People's Congress session than last year, according to the session's secretariat. The motions covered a wide range of topics, such as protecting property rights, developing artificial intelligence and improving people's life quality. Our reporter Wu Guoxiu tells us more from the office that's handling these motions.
Four hundred and ninety one motions were submitted to the secretariat of China's annual session of the NPC by the deadline of Monday noon. Compared with 325 motions last year, the number increased by 51 percent. The secretariat says this reflects legislators' increasing ability to perform their duties. The motions focus heavily on the country's further reform and opening-up.
GUO ZHENHUA, DIRECTOR GROUP FOR HANDLING MOTIONS, NPC SESSION SECRETARIAT "Many motions reflect the shift in economic engines. Many deputies ask to push for the legalization of big data, artificial intelligence and automatic driving."
The director says a large number of the motions focus on amending laws in the business sector, such as protecting property rights. For topics related to people's lives, the lawmakers propose amending laws protecting the elderly, women and juveniles. Some have also proposed laws on protecting people's personal information. Controlling pollution is also a hot topic, including a law to protect the Yangtze River.
WU GUOXIU BEIJING "These are the original copies of 491 motions submitted. The cases feel very heavy, not only by the weight of documents, but also by the weight of ideas. Each motion is submitted by at least 30 NPC deputies."
GUO ZHENHUA, DIRECTOR GROUP FOR HANDLING MOTIONS, NPC SESSION SECRETARIAT "According to the legal process, the Secretariat will analyze the motions carefully and give processing reports that will be submitted to the Presidium of the NPC Standing Committee."
The office also received nearly 8,000 suggestions from deputies, compared with 7,139 last year. Some touch on very detailed issues like helping small companies ease their funding pressures, and opening a senior care market. They'll be reviewed and sent to departments in charge of the related matters after the NPC session concludes. Wu Guoxiu, CGTN, Beijing.
