Iran has welcomed the recent US-Russia ceasefire agreement in southwestern Syria and suggested it could be the basis for a country-wide pause in hostilities if successful.
"If the US-Russia ceasefire agreement in Syria could be extended to whole Syria ... for sure, it can be helpful," Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qasemi told reporters in his weekly press conference in Tehran on Monday.

To implement the agreement successfully, the US should stop targeting Syrian government forces, he said, adding that Washington must not overlook the facts on the ground.
For any agreement, taking notice of the sovereignty and integrity of Syria is of primary importance, Qasemi stressed.
On Friday, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the US and Russia had reached a ceasefire agreement to quell fighting in southwest Syria, covering the provinces of Sweida, Daraa, and Qunaitera. The agreement went into effect on Sunday.
A new round of intra-Syrian talks aimed at ending the seven years of war in the country started in the Swiss city of Geneva on Monday.
