The world's largest mobile operator says it's continuing to press ahead with 5G research. The chairman of China Mobile was speaking at the company's annual general meeting in Hong Kong. It comes despite the ongoing war of words between China and the US. CGTN reporter Zhu Dan has the latest.
The 5G era may be even closer than you think. China Mobile, the world's largest mobile phone operator, held an annual meeting in Hong Kong on Wednesday. The company's chairman says that the Chinese government may release 5G licenses by the end of this year.
YANG JIE CHAIRMAN, CHINA MOBILE "We have done a lot of 5G experiments across China's different cities. Our experiments will cover 40 Chinese cities soon."
Yang says 5G will incorporate many elements aimed at sophisticating, yet simplifying our lives.
YANG JIE CHAIRMAN, CHINA MOBILE "We will continue to complement the existing 4G network with 5G infrastructure, to promote 5G technologies along with new communication technologies -- for example, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and Edge Computing -- to develop comprehensive 5G ecosystems in digitizing peoples' lives."
The US Federal Communications Commission recently denied a bid by China Mobile to provide services in the United States, citing risks that the Chinese government could use the approval to conduct espionage against the U.S. government. The company rejected the US government's accusation.
YANG JIE CHAIRMAN, CHINA MOBILE "China Mobile is a listed company in Hong Kong and the US, and always obeys international and local laws and rules. It has never done anything to harm the national security of the US. And the move by the FCC puts unreasonable pressure on the Chinese company."
According to the company's annual report, by the end of 2018, China Mobile had 2.41 million 4G base stations and had served 713 million 4G customers in 239 countries and regions.
ZHU DAN HONG KONG "The chairman of China Mobile also says the company will continue to promote research on key technologies and applications, taking the lead in developing 5G infrastructure and actively engaging in 5G network experimentation. Experts say only by enhancing the competitiveness of its product, can the company succeed and embrace the 5G era. Zhu Dan, CGTN, HK."
