In southern China, Sansha city has seen its first nest of baby sea turtles hatched this year. After nearly seven weeks of hatching, 46 of them emerged and some even decided to head out to sea before being rescued by animal protection patrols. Sea turtles usually nest between March and October. Their greatest threat is from the commercial harvest for eggs and food. Researchers have recorded 15 nesting activities on the city's north island so far this year. Over the past few years, Sansha has set up special protection stations on its islands. The number of sea turtle hatchings has been increasing over the years.
