Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the government has long had a national program attempting to deradicalize Islamist militants. And for some time, it's also had special schools aiming to deradicalize the children of terrorists. CGTN's Silkina Ahluwalia reports on one of these schools in Jakarta. The faces of the children have been obscured for their protection.
Handayani Marsudi Putera is a special place that was created by Indonesia's Ministry of Social Affairs to accommodate children who've been exposed to radical ideologies, the most recent one was the children that were involved in the Surabaya church bombings in May of 2018.
NENENG HERYANI HEAD OF REHABILITATION, HANDAYANI MARSUDI PUTERA "Those children are victims of their parents' mistakes. We brought them here and the first thing we did was to make sure they were in proper physical health. Out of the 7 children that were involved, all of them are in good condition now, except one that was injured during the attack."
Aside from that, the children are also given social and mental guidance along with enhancing their individual skills and talents.
There are a total of 170 children in the institution. Most of them were deported from Turkey when it was found out they were being taken to Syria to join ISIL.
NENENG HERYANI HEAD OF REHABILITATION, HANDAYANI MARSUDI PUTERA "When the children first arrived here, many of them had suicidal thoughts. They believed that was their jihad, an act that will bring them to heaven. But after giving them social, mental and spiritual therapy, they now understand better. We teach them to value their life and their country. Most importantly, to respect each other's religious and cultural differences."
Neneng says each child is accompanied by a social worker and is provided with individual counselling classes. This is to make sure each child is given proper care based on their personal needs.
Extremism continues to be a nationwide concern in Indonesia. After the Surabaya bombings, the government is becoming more wary of extremist ideologies spreading across the nation.
TAUFIK ANDRIE ANTI-TERRORISM EXPERT "I think the problem is not just these terrorist are using children but that they are influencing children from the beginning. It seems the government cannot reach to deal with the issue in a strategic way. Sometimes we don't have enough resources or capacity to engage with the curriculum or school module like homeschooling which is totally controlled by the family or even the radical community."
Taufik believes rehabilitation is the most appropriate approach to dealing with these radical children.
And that's exactly what the Handayani Marsudi Putera institution is doing eradicating extremist ideas and inspiring the younger generation for Indonesia's promising future.
