We wrap things up in Egypt where a new and very lucrative men's squash competition has just concluded in Cairo. The Black Ball Open attracted some of world's top players with one of the local hopefuls, World number 9 Karim Abdel Gawad emerging as the winner. CGTN's Adel EL Mahrouky has more.
Egypt has celebrated the birth of a new world class squash competition this week. The Black Ball open is part of the PSA world tour and offers the highest financial awards in Egypt, with total prizes summing up to 180 thousand US dollars.
ASSEM KHALIFA EGYPTIAN SQUASH ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT "The competition is great. It's one of the most beautiful competitions I've seen in the world. Egypt deserves to host big sports competition, especially in squash. It's a right for Egyptians to see their squash sons playing live in front of them."
ALI FARAG WORLD NUMBER 2 "It's a pleasure to play in such a prestigious tournament at home. We grew up watching all the star players in squash and we aspired to be like them. I think it's one of the main reasons Egypt is doing so well. Foreign players are saying this is one of the best tournaments around the world it's a huge honor for us."
Despite Egyptian players' success all over the world, Egypt only has two international squash events annually including this one. It was an exciting final for the audience, as two Egyptians clashed for the title and the grand prize. World number nine Karim Abdel GAWAD snatched the title from Ali Farag, the world's number two.
KARIM ABDEL GAWAD WORLD NO. 9 "This tournament was one of the biggest tournaments in the year, so we're happy to have played here in Egypt. I am glad to win a major tournament by the end of this season. I'm looking forward to the next season. Ali is one of the toughest players. He's one of the most consistent players this season and the season before. Beating him today, I had to put everything, like the mental side and the physical side in squash, everything just to be able to beat him."
Had he won this match, Farag, the runner up, would have been the world's number one.
ALI FARAG WORLD NO. 2 "It's been a dream of my own to be world number one, ever since I was young. Now I'm number two so there is only one step ahead of me, so I'm really looking forward to getting there."
If he keeps up such outstanding performance in future competitions, soon Farag could knock down the Egyptian Mohamed EL Shorbagy to second place in the world ranking. Adel EL Mahrouky CGTN, Cairo, Egypt.
