Uzbekistan is investigating media reports that the man who killed eight people in New York by mowing them down in a truck is a citizen of the Central Asian nation, an Uzbek Foreign Ministry official told reporters on Wednesday.
As of press time, the official hasn’t provided further information.
Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev vowed to assist US police and offered condolence to the victims of New York truck attack.
"Uzbekistan is ready to use all forces and resources to help in the investigation of this act of terror," says Shavkat Mirziyoyev in a statement on the Uzbek foreign ministry's website.
The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov, was reported as an immigrant who came to the US from Uzbekistan in 2010.
He drove a rented pickup truck and hit pedestrians and cyclists on a popular bike path in Manhattan, New York on Tuesday, killing eight people.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said early the attack was a "cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians."
